BOTOX Iowa | Collagen IowaSun. Age. Stress. All of these factors can cause fine lines and wrinkles to develop around the eyes, forehead, cheeks and neck. BOTOX® is a purified form of botulism toxin most commonly used (and FDA-approved) to treat frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet and platysmal bands (wrinkles of the neck). It is injected into these areas using an ultra thin needle that provides a minimal amount of discomfort, if any. Treatment of BOTOX® in these areas causes underlying muscle to relax, giving a smoother, younger looking appearance that is noticeable within 48-72 hours, and continues to improve over the next 7-21 days.

With BOTOX® injections, there is minimal pain, discomfort or downtime. Many patients come to Iowa City Plastic Surgery on their lunch hour for BOTOX® and return to work immediately following the procedure. Although it is very rare, there are possible side effects, including mild discomfort, bruising or swelling at the injection site. Immediately following BOTOX®, you will be asked to refrain from rubbing or massaging the injection site to ensure proper filtration of BOTOX® into the desired muscle tissue. We ask that you also remain upright so the BOTOX® does not spread to unwanted areas of the body.

The positive effects of BOTOX® will remain for around 3 months depending on the amount of wrinkles, age of patient and amount of injections given. Most BOTOX® patients will have injections performed 1-3 times per year to maintain their youthful appearance.

Restylane® was recently approved by the FDA for its use as a cosmetic dermal filler to help correct and fill in facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial lines. It is safe and natural, and is not derived from either rooster-derived hyaluronic acids or bovine collagen products. It is made from hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance found in the human body. Because it is completely natural, Restylane can be used without allergy testing required with some of the other injections.

As with the other the other non-invasive injection treatments provided at Iowa City Plastic Surgery, Restylane offers immediate improvement and very little downtime or discomfort. Restylane patients often stop by on their lunch hour and are back to work right after the treatment. Restylane is particularly effective in the treatment of moderate to deep wrinkles and folds of the skin and can dramatically improve laugh lines and wrinkles around the nose and lips.

JUVÉDERM ® Injectable Gel

Juvéderm is an injectable gel that gently reverses many signs of aging in the face, including fine lines and wrinkles, crow's feet, thinning lips and loosening skin. It can also "plump up" the lips, sculpt the cheeks, and restore a youthful oval shape to the face. It is made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that works with collagen and elastin to give volume and support to the skin. Because it is non-animal-based and highly biocompatible, no pre-treatment testing is needed. Juvéderm comes in three formulas optimized for the depth of the area being treated. Results last about 6-9 months and can be made to last even longer with a simple follow-up treatment a few weeks after the initial injection.

Voluma™ XC

Juvederm Voluma™ XC is a new, FDA-approved dermal filler formulated specifically to add volume to the face around the cheeks and chin. This is the only injectable gel created to provide a subtle, natural enhancement to the mid-face, addressing changes in definition that occur over time. Juvederm Voluma XC can help restore more youthful contours by plumping up the area that so often loses volume as part of the aging process. It can also return a firmer shape to the jaw line when some softening has set in.

Juvederm Voluma XC is not only an effective treatment method, but it is long lasting as well. In many patients, the results will last for a period of up to 18 months.

The active ingredient in Juvederm Voluma XC is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a substance naturally produced within the skin. As we get older, the levels of HA present in the skin begin to decline, resulting in a loss of volume and sunken or sagging cheeks. Juvederm Voluma XC integrates into the existing collagen and elastin in the skin tissue to offer greater support and elasticity. This can provide a noticeable smoothing and firming to the skin and lend the facial structure more substantial definition.

Juvederm Voluma XC is the latest in the Juvederm line of dermal fillers. These various formulas have a successful history of reducing the appearance of wrinkles and folds in the skin and rejuvenating the face.

Radiesse™ is a synthetic injectable filler that reduces wrinkles, creases and scars by augmenting the body’s natural collagen supply. Composed of microspheres in a biocompatible gel, Radiesse is made from the same minerals found in our bones, so it carries little risk of allergic reaction. Radiesse can be used on many areas of the body, including the lips, nasolabial folds, peri-oral lines, depressed scars and oral commissures.

Treatments typically take 15 minutes and require only local anesthetic. Side effects such as swelling or bruising are minimal and should fade within a few days. Results are visible immediately after the injection and can last for months or years, although the procedure can be repeated as often as you wish.

Full, natural-looking eyelashes can now be achieved through a prescription treatment called Latisse®. Latisse is the first and only eyelash treatment approved by the FDA to help grow longer, fuller and darker eyelashes and treat hypotrichosis, a condition that includes having inadequate or not enough eyelashes.

Latisse contains bimatoprost, an active ingredient that improves the appearance of your lashes and is often found in glaucoma medication. While the precise science of the treatment is not known, research suggests that the number of hairs and duration of the growth process are increased by bimatoprost.

This prescription medication is applied topically to the base of the eyelashes once a day, after makeup and contact lenses have been removed and any other skincare products have already been applied. While it does not replace mascara, Latisse offers an attractive complement to help further enhance full, long and beautiful lashes.
